Contacting the Seller

• Make the initial contact via e-mail. Ask as many questions as possible. This shows real interest in the item. If still interested, request a phone number and discuss the item person to person.
• Keep the topic of conversation on the item you are interested in. Don’t begin by asking personal questions. This could raise suspicions from the seller as to your true intent.
• Limit the personal information you disclose. Don’t disclose any personal information until you are comfortable that the seller is legitimate.
• Know the market of what you are possibly going to purchase. Don’t insult the buyer with an unbelievably low offer.
• If at anytime the seller seems suspicious or makes you uncomfortable, do not continue to pursue the transaction.
• Remember, if the deal seems to good to be true, it probably is.

 

Meeting the Seller

• Always meet the seller in a public place. Never allow a seller to come to your residence.
• Meet the seller during daylight hours if possible. If not, meet in a well lit area.
• If possible, take an additional party with you when you meet the seller. However, keep in mind this should not be an intimidating act.
• Request to see the seller’s identification. Verify the information with what you have been given. Also, volunteer to show the seller your identification to verify to them who you are.
• Print a copy of the ad and bring it with you.
  
  

The Sale

• If having an item shipped to you, never agree to pay in full until you receive the item. However, you should expect to pay a deposit.
• Never request to pay with a personal check, money order, or request to wire money to the seller. Cash is always best.
• If paying with a cahiers check, arrange for the seller to accompany you to the bank when it is obtained.
• Never provide any personal banking information such as a bank account number or credit card number.
• Use the provided Sales Agreement for a receipt. Print two copies. One for you and one for the seller.
• Always save a copy of the ad with your receipt.
