Posting An Ad
When posting an ad, always consider the following:

• Be very descriptive. The more information the better. Describe the item accurately and list any known defects or malfunctions.
• Don't put information in your ad that you wouldn't want the entire world to have (such as your home phone number).
• Post photos that show the item in detail.
• Avoid misleading titles, descriptions, and photos.
• Know the market of what you are selling. Have a competitive asking price.
• Always list an asking price.

 

Responding To a Potential Seller

• Communicate initially via e-mail. Only provide additional contact information when or if you feel comfortable to do so.
• Be honest when answering questions from a potential buyer.
• Once the potential buyer is serious about a possible purchase, obtain as much information as possible from the potential buyer.
• When you obtain information from a potential buyer, attempt to verify as much of that information as possible.
  

Meeting the Buyer

• Always meet the buyer in a public place. Never allow a buyer to come to your residence.
• Meet the buyer during daylight hours if possible. If not, meet in a well lit area.
• If possible, take an additional party with you when you meet the buyer. However, keep in mind this should not be an intimidating act.
• Request to see the buyer's identification. Verify the information with what you have been given. Also, volunteer to show the buyer your identification to verify to them who you are.

 

The Sale

• Never ship an item without determining the method of payment. We recommend requiring a deposit be received before the item is shipped.
• Never accept a personal check, money order, or allow money to be wired to you. Cash is always best.
• When dealing with cash, check to be positive it is a legal bill and not counterfeit. For counterfeit tips click the Treasury Departments link at www.treas.go/usss/know_your_money.shtml.
• If accepting a cahiers check, arrange to accompany the buyer to the bank when it is obtained.
• Never accept any personal banking information such as a bank account number or credit card number.
• Use the provided Sales Agreement for a receipt. Print two copies. One for you and one for the buyer.
